The age of hippos is estimated to be about 55 million years. They are native to sub-Saharan Africa, and their name means “River Horse” in Ancient Greek.
They are the third-largest land mammal after elephants and white rhinos, their closest relatives being whales and dolphins, which you certainly wouldn’t have imagined. Their food consists mainly of grass, and on average, they live about 45 years.
Despite their shabby appearance, hippos can easily outrun a human, being very aggressive, especially when threatened. They still look so cute, though! Just don’t get too close…
