A baby elephant that accidentally fell into a ditch and got stuck upside down has been rescued…with the help of an excavator.
The male calf, four or five months old, stumbled and slid into a ditch in Bokakhat in northeastern India’s Assam state.
He was crossing a tea estate with the rest of his herd at the time of the accident.
The calf’s mother and several other elephants tried to pull him out of the ditch but to no avail.
After some locals tried to pull the struggling calf out, it was handed over to rangers and an animal rights expert to step in.
But they also had to admit defeat and called in a bulldozer.
Once free, the baby elephant was reunited with his mother.
Anil Deka from the International Fund for Animal Welfare said that he only suffered nothing more than a few bruises despite his ordeal.
