Heartbreaking footage has emerged of a blind and orphaned elephant mo.ur.ning the de.a.th of its best friend after the animal di.e.d from old age at a nature park in Thailand.
The adopted elephant Mae Perm was rescued from a logging camp by Elephant Nature Park in 1992 but d.i.ed earlier this month.
Now, Jokia, her best friend since 1997, spends hours crying after losing a companion staff says she spent all day with her.
Lek Chailert, staff at the park, wrote on Facebook about Jokia standing next to Mae Perm’s body for six hours after her de.a.th.
‘She stood on top of her for almost six hours, touching, nudging and leaning on Mae Perm’s lifeless body. Even then, we found it very difficult to separate the two of them.
‘Jokia didn’t eat much during the whole morning, and when she went to get melons at the other end of her shelter, we took advantage of this moment to pull Mae Perm’s body out of the room and gently down into her final resting place.
‘Jokia arrived just as we moved the body, and she touched Mae Perm, groaning in pain as her friend left her forever.
‘From today, we will do all we can to help her through this most difficult time, as well as enter into the days of healing and new friendships.’
Lek added: ‘I will mourn the loss of my old girl Mae Perm for some time yet. Every single day when I look at them together, the more I see their strong bond to each other, it makes me so afraid.’
However, park rangers hope Jokia will find a way to make new friends and try to socialize her with another elephant family.
‘Jokia starts her day with the Navaan family, and Dani comes along too. We are hoping for a successful relationship here, but only time will tell.
‘We are her eyes now, and we watch her closely, giving her all the time in the world.
‘Jokia is [still] sad about the loss of Mae Perm, her best friend. She walks around… looking for her friend. We hope she will find her new life partner to ease her sadness and fulfil her longing again.’
