An unusual power struggle took place on the Serengeti savannah when a lion was chased up a tree by an angry elephant.
The lioness made the potentially dangerous mistake of entering elephant territory, and when she was discovered, the gray beast was literally hot on her tail.
The chase on the Central Serengeti ended with the lioness getting stuck in the tree branches while the elephant desperately tried to approach her from below.
Despite reaching over to the cat to grab her by the tail, the lion couldn’t reach the lioness, and she desperately roared for help.
The goal turned the lioness’s position when she was separated from the pride of the foraging lions.
The remarkable moment was filmed by husband and wife Dalida and Andrew Innes, visiting Tanzania on a hunting trip.
The couple, who live in Sydney, Australia, said they were stunned when they watched the dramatic chase that lasted at least four minutes.
Ms. Innes, 41, said: ‘We were looking at the pride of the lions foraging in their recent ki.l.l.
‘In the distance, a herd of elephants surrounded a tree, and a lioness was in the tree. She has become detached from the pride of the lions we are watching. ‘
‘Suddenly, the lioness in the tree rushed to freedom. However, she was not alone when one of the elephants decided to pursue her,’ Ms. Innes added.
‘The elephant chased the lioness for a kilometer until the lioness decided to climb into another tree to escape the elephant.
‘The elephant then reached to try to pull the lioness from the tree. In the end, though the elephant gave up. Finally, the lioness descended from the tree and reunited with her cubs.
“She must have been scared when she appeared stuck in the first tree and after that, she seemed to be running for her life.
“We’re not sure what the elephant was doing, maybe she was trying to protect the kids in the herd or maybe she was trying to prove herself the queen of the jungle.”
