This elephant clearly loaded his trunks, imitating a submarine and submerging himself in water in an attempt to cool off.
After he waded into the Chobe river to escape the searing Botswana heat, there was practically nothing left to see of the jaunty pachyderm.
As photographer Antonio Orfão snapped away from a tiny boat, the elephant held his trunk upright – just like a periscope.
Mr. Cossa said, “Elephants have crossed this river many times before, and it is always magnificent to watch.”
“This time was different since we were able to safely position our little boat in front of the elephant.”
But we kept our distance out of respect for it, and when we noticed him, he was approaching to cross.
“It was wonderful to witness a giant male elephant swimming towards us and capture the moment on camera.
“This was a minor moment, no more than a few seconds because the elephant was approaching our way.
“He didn’t seem to care about us, and we had to move out of his way.”
