He may have been declared the ‘ninth wonder of the universe’ as ‘the only flying elephant in the world.’
But these Dumbo-shaped clouds prove that you can see an elephant fly – even if it’s just inside a cloud formation.
The Disney cartoon character appeared in the sky above Flagg in Derbyshire, just a short distance from another formation like the elephant parade in the Jungle Book.
They were taken by nature photographer Jim, who said: ‘I can’t believe it – Dumbo on one side and the Jungle Book on the other.
‘I was driving around looking for wildlife to photograph when I saw clouds in the fields. It looked like Dumbo the elephant, so I quickly took out my camera.
‘Then, less than a minute later, I turned around and saw another cloud shaped like the scene of the elephants marching in the Jungle Book. It was fantastic.
“The great thing was that they were two hundred yards apart.”
A cloud that looked like a large elephant was wagging its tail and raising its trunk. A second later appeared in the form of a herd.
Dumbo was Disney’s most financially successful film of the 1940s, ultimately grossing just over £1 million during its initial release.
The film tells the story of a baby elephant in a circus, mocked for his giant ears, who is helped by a mouse to become ‘the world’s first flying elephant’.
