What a cheeky monkey! This ravenous primate was filmed stealing a family’s breakfast right off the table.
While on safari in South Africa, photographer Leigh Lofgren, 61, was having breakfast with her husband, Bob.
However, while they were getting closer and closer to where they were eating, she observed a group of monkeys heading in their direction – and the mischief-makers made good use of the opportunity when a family at the next table stood up to leave.
Leigh said: “We’d just come back from a morning safari and were having breakfast. There was a larger table with six French people at the end of the deck, and the camp staff had been using slingshots to keep the monkeys at bay.
“While my husband Bob and I were chatting, eating toast, drinking coffee, and the French departed suddenly, it was just me and my husband.
“When we returned inside to assist in the kitchen, we observed the monkeys returning, and I always carry my camera with me — I decided to pick up the camera and wait to see what would happen, as the monkeys were getting bolder and closer.
“Suddenly, this one monkey flew in from the roof and grabbed a slice of toast before realizing there was more under the napkins, so he just helped himself—he ate a piece and kept the rest for later.”
“I took some photos, and our server returned, shooing the monkeys away. I picked up my toast and put down the camera; the next thing I knew, it was gone.
“One monkey had been hiding nearby, and while everyone was concentrating on our server shouting to the monkeys to leave, he sprinted up behind me and swiped my toast away – I wasn’t able to get a photograph of it because we were laughing so hard.”
