With temperatures above 86°F, Lake Tahoe was assaulted over the weekend by many people who decided to cool off. But on Sunday, some of them received a very unexpected surprise: a mama black bear, and her three cubs, decided to join them. It sounds crazy, I know, and some swimmers can’t believe in their eyes. However, considering their thick furry coat, it’s pretty easy to understand the reasoning behind their decision.
Just like everyone else, the bear family decided to take a day off and have fun at the beach as they have been seen taking dips multiple times during that day. One of the beachgoers – Jen Watkins, originally spotted the bears in Pope Beach. She even captured the moment on camera. Four-legged visitors have been seen leisurely strolling the beach undisturbed by crowds of people. However, they had a small incident with a dog.
“We were all a bit shocked,” Jen said. I guess (the bear) came out earlier… It was a bit unfriendly, guarding the cubs with a golden retriever. ”
Black bears are popular on Lake Tahoe’s beaches, even on summer days when the lake is quite crowded. But given the large bear population that lives in California – 25,000 to 35,000 individuals – it can be a common sight.
