Just when we think we’ve seen everything, nature finds another way to amaze us. Christian Spencer is a talented photographer and spent the day in Rio de Janeiro to make an extraordinary discovery.
A beautiful prism effect of light appeared when a Jacobin hummingbird flew across the sun with its wings open. At that moment, it appeared as if the bird’s body was made of rainbows.
“There is no special technique, just the diffraction of light through the wings of this particular hummingbird.”
Spencer captured the beautiful ‘rainbow’ movements of birds in 2011 for a film called Dance of Time, which won 10 international awards.
Years later, Spencer returned to complete more ‘rainbow hummingbird’ work. He said: ‘I decided to try and photograph the same phenomenon produced by bird’s wings with my camera.”
And this leads to Winged Prism, a series of stunning images revealing“ a secret of nature that we cannot be seen with our eyes.”
Many people have asked if Winged Prism has been edited, as it looks like magic is real, but Spencer insists there was no digital manipulation.
“There’s no special technique, just the diffraction of light through the wings of this particular hummingbird.”
“No one could have ever dreamed that this was real,” he said. “I receive emails every day from people around the world who are touched by these images.”
Spencer said he did not use any digital manipulation while creating the series. “There is no special technique,” he explained, “just the diffraction of light through the wings of these colorful birds.”
“No one could ever have dreamed that this was a reality. I receive emails every day from people around the world who are touched by these images.”
