This is the ingenious moment a lost elephant could climb a specially crafted rope ladder and exit a canal.
The elephant, estimated to be around 25 years old, had fallen into a canal in Welikanda near Polonnaruwa, eastern Sri Lanka, when wildlife officials decided to come up with a plan.
Footage shows the elephant wading through the canal’s waters before discovering a specially crafted rope ladder made for him by the Department of Wildlife.
The clip shows the determined elephant initially trying to walk up a slippery slope along the canal bank.
However, after several attempts, he could not get his hind legs out of the water and back into the canal.
Rescuers then used firecrackers to move the elephant along the canal and towards a specially made ladder prepared for it.
Finally, the elephant was able to climb the ladder with ropes, sticks, and tires and then began to heave his body out of the water.
The helpless elephant struggled to get out of the water and grab the rope during the six-hour rescue mission.
After many attempts, he finally climbed the ladder and returned to the dry land.
