When found alone on the side of the road, this little raccoon’s future doesn’t look so bright. It was only a few weeks old and already an orphan, forced to deal with such a difficult world on its own.
Even after he was rescued, the odds weren’t in his favor as they couldn’t find any place for him in the nearby wildlife. Then Nikki Robinson – a volunteer wildlife rescue – walks in!
“When you ask what you should do with [an orphaned raccoon], they say, “Leave it alone and let nature handle it,” Robinson said. “That broke my heart. I couldn’t let that happen! ”
A woman with a great heart, Nikki decided to do everything in her power to save that little soul. But since she worked all day, she reached out to her mother, who was retired and was looking for some kind of company, especially the company of a baby raccoon. They named it Little Hands and since then Nikki’s mother and the orphaned animal have become inseparable.
“The first time she gave him a bottle and he looked up at her, she just melted,” said Robinson. “She was very sweet to him early on because they liked to be touched a lot. So she created a bond with him.”
Thanks to Nikki’s mother, Little Hands made an amazing recovery and within a few months, he was well enough to return to the wild. But even after they released him, 3-4 months later, the woman who used to bottle-feed him still left him some food in the backyard. That until the raccoon seemed like he wondered leaving the property.
However, From time to time, Little Hands still visits the woman who saved his life, even though it’s been almost three years since they first met.
“Every day, she sits outside and waits, even when they grow up they will come to visit her and she just lights up and she loves it,” Nikki said. “He wanted his hugs, then he’ll have his food and wander off.”
