In one incredibly moving scene, a nursing goose was caught on camera as she waited outside the veterinary clinic door while her partner undergoes a life-saving surgery. The moment took place at the Cape Wildlife Center in Massachusetts!
When volunteers at the Cape Center spotted one of the geese living in a nearby pond fidgeting around, they immediately became concerned.
So they decided to bring Arnold – the male goose – inside their facility for further inspection. The vet’s concerns proved well-founded when they discovered the goose had an injured leg and its life was in real danger. The only option to save Arnold’s life was surgery!
“To save his foot and give him a chance to survive, we knew we had to operate on his foot,” the Cape Wildlife Center wrote on Facebook. “Our best guess is that a Snapping turtle or other predator injured it while swimming. So we gave him antibiotics, pain medications and fasted him for surgery the next morning.”
However, it turns out that it’s not only the vets concerned about Arnold’s condition. As the medical team was getting ready for surgery, they noticed an unlikely guest outside the door. Another goose was sitting there, and the vets immediately recognized her as Arnold’s mate. Apparently, the girl somehow tracked down her boyfriend and watched to stay by his side during these difficult times.
“We only heard a light knock at the clinic door,” the center wrote. “We turned around and saw his partner waddling on the porch and trying to break into our clinic! Somehow she managed to locate him….”
Worried, Arnold’s best friend remained at the door during the procedure. Thankfully, the doctors did a great job, and the surgery was a success. As soon as they finished their work, they opened the door and let the two geese reunite.
They wrote: “She remained there throughout the entire process, watching us work, never moving from the doorway. “Both seem to feel much more comfortable in each other’s presence.
Although Arnold must stay at the center a little longer, the staff hope he will recover as soon as possible to be with his caring girlfriend. “We will do our best to get him back quickly and will perform bandage changes and treatment at the door when possible so his partner can check on him,” Cape Wildlife Center wrote.
